If I am concerned about my child’s speech or language development, what should I do?

Trust your instincts! Most of the time a parent’s instincts about a child are absolutely right!

If your child needs help with his/her speech or language, it is important to get that help as early as possible. Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) are licensed professionals who can diagnose and treat speech and language delays and disorders. SLPs evaluate speech and language skills using tests that are non-medical and involve observations and conversation.

What are some “red flags” that might indicate my child should be seen by a Speech and Language Pathologist?

“Red flags” for speech and language development are signs that a child might not be developing like his/her peers. Some “red flags” for speech or language delay include:

  • the child does not respond to his/her surroundings in a typical way
  • the child does not play with peers and toys in the way other kids his/her age do
  • the child does not use a variety of sounds or words
  • the child does not understand and/or respond when asked a question
  • the child does not follow instructions
  • the child has difficulty telling adults what he/she needs and wants
  • the child tantrums frequently because he/she is frustrated that others don’t understand him/her
  • the child has difficulty academically and/or socially in school
  • the child is a picky eater and is not gaining weight
  • the child has excessive saliva and/or a “droopy” mouth posture
  • the child has a flaccid or protruded tongue
  • the child has difficulty accurately pronouncing English sounds
  • the child’s speech production is difficult to understand

What is the length of treatment sessions?

Sessions are typically 45 minutes in length. Group sessions may be longer.

When will I see changes in my child?

Every child and family is different, which can make it difficult to predict when you will see progress. During the assessment process, we will make a plan for regular reassessment. We expect progress at each reassessment. If progress isn’t observed, we will review our treatment plan and make changes as needed. We will also maintain regular communication with parents and caregivers so that therapeutic intervention can be tweaked as warranted.

How do I make payments?

Payment is made at the time of each session. You may pay by check, credit card, or cash. A receipt will be provided

Will my insurance pay for our sessions?

Insurance companies consider Speech Therapy Kidz an out of network provider. Payment is provided by you directly to Speech Therapy Kidz with reimbursement from the insurance company going directly to you. You can contact your insurance company to determine if you have out of network benefits for Speech/Language/Oral-Motor Therapy. Speech Therapy Kidz will provide you with a receipt that includes diagnosis and procedure codes that can be submitted by you to your insurance company if you have out of network benefits.

Some key questions to ask your insurance company are the following:

  • What is my deductible?
  • How many sessions does my plan cover per calendar year?
  • What is the reimbursement amount for each session?
  • Is approval necessary from my child’s pediatrician?
  • Is a treatment plan necessary from the Speech and Language Pathologist?

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide 24 hours notice when cancelling a session. Speech Therapy Kidz reserves the right to charge for a missed session with less than 24 hours notice.
